The Great Dopamine Rush of 2025

    • Day 0

  • SEA & Japan in 40 days

Well I had many objectives and goals for this trip. I succeeded in most of them. Or at least got close enough to be happy about them. I wanted to climb in all four countries I visited, I climbed in 3 (Japan was way too fun with my partner to even think of climbing). I wanted to lose 10lbs, I lost 9. I wanted to read 7 books, I read 9.

I wanted to truly connect with people and make some lasting friendships, The group I climbed with in the south of Thailand I’ll stay in contact with them for years to come. I wanted to experience the sun rise in every country I visited, This one seems trivial but I love a good sunrise. Especially in Railay beach, what a sunrise that is.

I wanted to be completely sober the entirety of my trip, This I failed in, but not for no good reason. Traveling alone I felt absolutely no drive to drink or party, but when Hannah was with me it was really nice to have some champagne with dinner, or go out drinking sake with strangers, making new friends. I wanted to come back to Canada in much better shape mentally and physically than when I left, this I feel was my greatest Success. I came back much fitter physically, all that walking and climbing and carrying backpacks, but mentally also. I have a much more assured sense of self than when I left in January. I am no longer second guessing myself like I was when I left.

The theme of this blog and of my trip was dopamine, and dopamine addiction. I was a prolific scroller, It was bad. I was attached to a screen more than 6 hours a day everyday. I read a few books on how to do a dopamine detox, This blog was a way to still feel connected to my loved ones with out a constant chance to get back on the reels and scroll for hours. In this I was successful, and I urge everyone else who is feeling joyless and over stimulated. To get away from social media for at least a while, and get your dopamine addiction under control.

On this trip I saw so much, I did so much, I ate so much, I experienced so much, I walked so much, and I spent so much. There were good times, great times, bad times and worse times. I never want to not travel. It really took me out of the months long rut I had been in. Get off your phone, go see the world.

This will be my last post for my Asia trip, but keep checking In. I will be posting about other trips and endeavors I undertake, throughout the year. Funnily enough, I have been invited to go to Mexico to hang out with a few friends of mine. I leave in 3 days for that trip, I think it may be karma for helping Hannah get to Japan because my buddy Jer paid for my flights and is putting me up while I am there.

Till then, Thank you for reading and dealing with my terrible grammar.

  • Day 41 – The Hangover

Now if you have ever seen the movie The Hangover, I think you can imagine how this day started. After sleeping only about 5 hours both of us were awake, feeling as you can imagine, bright eyed and bushy tailed. We drank an ungodly amount last night. It was arguably the most fun day and night id had my whole trip. Me and Hannah woke up feeling way to good, we went and got breakfast at the lounge. As always it was great, I really do love Japanese scrambled eggs on rice.

I think it was on the way back down from the lounge when we both realized we were totally still drunk from the night before. The headache I had in that moment could split a mountain. We were dying from here out, we went back to the room, called and got late check out and went back to bed. From several more hours being horizontal, we were feeling still woefully unprepared to embark on the 1.5 hour journey to the airport.

Well we did it with a little more swearing than normal, a few dry heaves and only a tiny argument. We had a wee bit of a hassle with checking our bags, as we bought these wizard robes that weighed like 2 kgs each. There was a bit of emergency rummaging, and a bunch of gratitude to past me who packed a spare plastic bag incase we needed to board with anything to make weight. We almost just wore the robes in the airport. From there we decided to get sushi, It was the last chance to stuff ourselves before flying home.

Well let me say, I never trust airport food. Ever. Its never very good and its always really expensive. Well all other airport food is not in Japan. We had arguably the best sushi of the trip in the airport, waiting for our flight. It wasn’t that expensive and it was just so bleeding good.

After our sushi we went and waited for the flight, it went off without a hitch. Hannah found us some ice cream in a pouch, that was weird, but good, but very weird. Sucking ice cream? That is just plain weird. Hannah hates flying and was asleep for most of the flight back, I on the other hand can never sleep well after I’ve been drinking. I slept for like an hour on our 8 hour flight back. We arrived at just after 9 am in Vancouver, on the same day we left. Man the past sucks, I liked going into the future.

We got home no problem from the airport.

    What a trip.

  • Day 40 – The Best For Last

The last day of our trip started with naught a cloud in the sky. We went up to the lounge for breakfast, Hannah and Is favorite breakfast this trip was by far soft scrambled eggs on rice. The Hilton did not disappoint us on this front. As we ate our breakfast on the 37th floor we looked out longingly to Mt Fuji, and its snow covered beauty. We intended on going there, but it never made sense with the rest of our plans. Today we decided to go to the Warner Bros Studio Japan to see the the Harry Potter exhibit there.

The view of Mt Fuji from the lounge over Tokyo.

After a 30 minute train ride we arrived at the studio. Hannah and I are both pretty nerdy about Harry Potter, so even though I had little expectation that the tour was going to be worth the $80 entrance fee per person we were excited.

From the moment we walked from the bright sunshine outside into the studio, my expectation of it not being that great was blown out of the water completely. Everywhere around us were grown ass adults, fully decked out in wizarding ropes and costumes from the movies. I mean 3 out of 5 people where dressed up. Immediately feeling underdressed, we hit up the absolutely massive store at the entrance and got ourselves decked out in our house colors.

    Flying books in the bookstore.
The great hall, these are all the real sets used in the films.
It was really cool being in the sets.
Hannah’s head of house. Cant believe she’s a Slytherin.
The moving staircase. In all the films they used this one mechanized prop to do the moving staircase shots with the help of green screen.
    The Gryffindor common room.
    The Slytherin common room
    The Goblet of Fire.
The practice dummy from The Order Of The Phoenix.
    The queen from wizards chess.
Death Eater masks. Hannah loved these.
Typical Slytherin loving the dark ones.
    Centaurs from the Forbidden Forest.
In the freezing cold wind at Hagrid’s hut.
A typical Slytherin meal, of bangers and mash with roast veggies and gravy. This was actually so delicious, both of us were impressed with how good the food was.
The Hogwarts Express. At least a replica.
Hannah becoming blurry as she’s about to get sucked up the fireplace.
The Ministry of Magic set was really cool. I particularly enjoyed it.
Just some Daily Prophets, I had to fight the urge to take one of these.
Diagon Alley as seen in the 6th film.
The original model of the castle used in the films. This photo does it no justice, this thing is the size of a house. Like 40ft by 40ft, all built by hand.

Now I could write a 3 page essay on our trip to the Warner Bros Studio, but I’m not. To sum it up it was one of the coolest experiences Hannah or I had ever done ever. Especially with all the people including ourselves dressed up, It was quite magical. It however proved a point that Hannah has been trying to shove down my throat the whole time we were here. I am a nerd, correction both of us are nerds.

After a few hours of chilling in the room recovering from our 5 hour studio tour, Hans and I went and helped ourselves to some more canapes and bottomless champagne in the lounge. Ill miss that lounge, the views were stunning. It was a great place to get loaded up on champagne before hitting the town and going bar hopping at the Golden Gai.

From the hotel we walked the 20 minutes to Golden Gai through downtown Shinjuku. What a place it is, there is like 10 cross walks at this one intersection. Golden Gai is a few small streets of teeny tiny bars that seat between 4 and 8 people. It was quite the place.

Hannah with her hot chocolate trying to stay warm in the icy breeze of nighttime Shinjuku.

We had an absolute riot at Golden Gai, we went to two bars. The first was a super fancy spirit bar where we had an amazing vodka cran. The second was a sake bar, at the second bar we met 2 other small groups of travelers. We stayed there for hours. After 3 giant bottles of sake had been drunk dry by our new friends and us, we parted as a much larger group of ten. From there we went into downtown Shinjuku to a karaoke bar and proceeded to terribly sing every song we could think of from our younger years. From karaoke things got hazy for a while, I came back to reality at another bar, some 2 hours had past. This was such a fun night. We said goodbye to our new friends and got a taxi back to the hotel.

Hannah belting out the words to what I guess was one of her favorite terrible pop songs.

    Till tomorrow.

  • Day 39 – Hiroshima To Tokyo

Hannah and I were up early to leave Hiroshima, we grabbed a quick hotel breakfast and caught a cab to the train. Side note, cabs in Japan are extremely cheap for short journeys, but extremely expensive for long ones. So weird. The train from Hiroshima to Tokyo takes about 4 hours, Hannah and I both made good progress in our books.

At this point the train system in Japan is really starting to make sense, I am very jealous we don’t have such an Intricate and functional system back home in Canada. After the 4 hour shinkansen train to Tokyo station, we caught a subway to Shinjuku. Now this was the only stay we booked where it wasn’t really that great of a location. The Hilton Tokyo is kind of off in a corner in Shinjuku, so its about a 10 minute walk to get into the more lively area.

So as this was our last stay of the trip we went all out with the hotel and booked a junior suite at the Hilton. Now we did not realize, that all suites come with access to the Hilton executive lounge on the 37th floor. That’s complimentary breakfast everyday, as well as canapes and open bar every night.

Very nearly as we arrived in Tokyo, Hannah was feeling off. We had tried another 711 sandwich of fried egg and teriyaki chicken on the train, but it did not sit well with her. After we tried to eat lunch she was full blown food poisoning. Kind of a bummer for our second to last day to spend it in bed. I am quite a restless person so with Hannah tucked in bed with some room service and a movie I set out to explore a bit in Shinjuku and maybe try Pachinko again.

My first experience with pachinko was such a riot, I think that’s what made my second venture into the game doubly abysmal. I lost $40 in like 15 minutes. I have an addictive personality, because of that I set limits on gambling if i ever try it so my plan to kill time was a complete failure. From the crowded insanely over stimulating pachinko parlor, I set off to try and find a particular convenience store favorite of Hannah’s, the rare salmon maki. We found this snack by means of a TikTok video Hannah had watched some weeks earlier. After successfully finding it on our first forage in Tokyo, She has looked for them in every Family Mart, 711, or Lawson that we have passed. Its funny when you are actively not trying to find something its always there, but as soon as you start looking for it, its nowhere to be found. I think I hit 9 different convenience stores on my way back to the hotel with no luck at all. this however did kill another hour. With Hannah having slept for a few hours she was feeling a lot better when I got back.

When she was feeling fit enough to get out of the hotel, which was only a few hours after being violently ill. I am pretty proud of her for rallying so quickly. We set off for the executive lounge with its bottomless champagne and canapes. We met a couple from Guam while we were sitting in the lounge and proceeded to chat with them for a couple of hours whilst getting nice and tipsy. When the lounge closed we decided to head down to the sushi restaurant in the hotel. We did not check the price of this restaurant, before we got a table. My goodness, we ordered 6 pieces of nigiri and 6 pieces of sashimi and 2 glasses of champagne. It was incredibly good sushi, but the price of $200 for that was definitely steep. All in all it was a pretty good day.

    Till tomorrow.

  • Day 38 – The A Bomb

Today started with a nice buffet breakfast in the hotel. Hannah and myself were both excited to go visit the Peace Memorial and the Peace Museum to learn more about the Hiroshima tragedy of Aug 6th 1945. After breakfast we walked down peace boulevard to the memorial park.

Now we thought we were prepared for it, We were both sadly mistaken. The museum was far beyond our expectations, in its ability to graphicly explain and portray the sheer extent of the atrocity that occurred here in Hiroshima. The number of innocent dead and how they died was a lot to take in at the museum. I learned about this in school when I was younger, but not face to face with bloody ripped and tattered clothes. Carbonized food in a child’s lunch box and photos of charred and burnt bodies. It was a lot, Both Hannah and myself shed some tears in the museum.

We walked around the rest of the memorial park for a few hours, visiting the thousands of paper cranes at the memorial, and the A-bomb Dome. Which is the last standing reminder of the devastation of that day. There was a lot of emotions today. Especially when the reality that 75 years ago exactly where we ate ramen yesterday, was the hypocenter of a 15 Kilo Ton nuclear explosion instantly vaporized or burned 75,000 people and wiped 14 sq kilometers of Hiroshima off the face of the earth.

From the memorial we went to go find some sushi for lunch. Now you cant always win when your playing restaurant roulette, our lunch sucked. From there we walked to a nearby massage parlor, Hannah got a well deserved massage. While she was getting a rub down, I went to a nearby Pachinko parlor. I am not much for gambling, but I’ve always wanted to try Pachinko. I understand how people get addicted to it, It was fun. An hour disappeared very quickly. I spent $50 after I collected my winnings so all in all not a bad way to spend an hour. We went back to the hotel for a quick change, and then we went to the restored Hiroshima castle. What a cool experience that was. There was so much history there.

From the castle we found a tiny hole in the wall udon restaurant, on the route back to the hotel. Hannah has had great luck picking restaurants, and our meal was incredible. On top of being delicious, it was only $20 for the two of us to leave satisfied. I ordered the suggested special from the chef, not realizing that it was a whole katsu donburi and a bowl of udon. Thankfully Hannah loves noodles and helped me finish it.

On our walk back to the hotel, we stopped and grabbed some pastries and a bottle of champagne for dessert. Sadly the champagne was not that great, but the pastry was good. I am going to miss finishing the night with pastries and champagne. Hannah was asleep by 9pm. Tomorrow we head back to Tokyo to do our last leg of the trip.

    Till tomorrow.

  • Day 37 – Kyoto to Hiroshima

Hannah and I woke up nice and early today. Our train was leaving for Hiroshima at 10:30am, and we wanted to go back to Kacto for breakfast again. That place was so damn good. The food was just as good as the first time, we had the same dishes.

The 2 hour train ride to Hiroshima was smooth and uneventful, Hannah napped and I read. We landed in Hiroshima station at 12:30pm, Now I must admit Hannah and I got all kinds of lost and confused in this station. Half of it was under construction, and the other half had very contradicting signs. After a brief struggle to find a toilet and another brief struggle to find a taxi stand we were zooming off to our hotel.

All through my trip in Asia I have been using Agoda to find my stays. And Japan was no different except I have been booking our hotels only a day in advance here. Now what’s cool about travelling a country in the off/shoulder season, is you can find some incredible deals on hotels. Last night I found us a $1160/night room, for only $240/night at the Hilton Hiroshima. I got to say this place is swanky. With breakfast included, and an incredible view.

After we dumped our bags at the hotel, we walked off into the city to find some food. I normally don’t like going back to the same restaurant during a trip, I like to experience as many different places as possible. That being said when you find something absolutely mind boggling good, exceptions sometimes have to be made. Ichiran is one of those places, we went here on our first or second day in Tokyo and it was bomb. The Ichiran in Hiroshima was no different, and the focus booth style seating really works for me. Its almost like being in a little bubble. If a restaurant only serves one dish, you know they do it well. Hannah and I left just as satisfied as the first time.

After lunch we went to blow off some steam in a local mall. Sadly very few Japanese fashions will ever fit my 6’4 frame, that being said everything fits Hannah here and she was having a ball with the styles available here. Now we shopped for several hours, bought a few things, but mostly we were just having fun. In one of the large multistorey malls there were some claw machine games, now everybody knows that these games are rigged to only stay closed every so many grabs of the claw. That being said I still have an affinity for them I can not explain. Well we had wasted a few bucks on some machines, when we came upon a machine with a single giant plush Kuromi doll in it. Again bigger the prize, less the chance. Well for nothing more than shits and giggles, and after some very critical remarks from Hans about the chances. I used a coin, and in one shot had won her a $150 Plushy. Both of us were pretty shocked, like these machines are rigged and its obvious. Now after winning it a new problem arose, what to do with it? like this thing is the size of a 4 year old kid, thankfully we have enough wiggle room between our baggage that I think we will be able to bring it with us on the plane back home.

When our appetite’s for shopping were fully sated, we walked back and dropped off our new treasures at the Hilton. We walked back out to the business district after a brief sit down and found a not conveyor conveyor belt sushi spot for dinner. The spot we found ended up being our favorite of the trip so far. Hannah loves salmon sushi, and its been kind of hard to find here. This place had an extensive salmon section, and the fish was incredibly fresh.

From dinner we called it an early night and went back to the hotel. Our room had such an incredible view of the city, I love sitting in the bay window reading and writing. Hannah has never had room service before so we ordered some ice cream and fresh fruit to tick that box. Tomorrow we are going to see the peace memorial.

    Till tomorrow.

  • Day 36 – Last Day In Kyoto

Because I’ve been slacking on writing, this morning I spent a couple hours catching up on the last few days posts. We thankfully booked a hotel for Kyoto that had ensuite laundry so Hannah was able to get some laundry done while I wrote.

We have been taking it pretty easy here in Kyoto, so today we had a pretty big list of sights we wanted to see. I have always had a deep love of Japan’s Samurai culture, so getting a chance to go to the samurai museum here in Kyoto was not something I was keen to miss. To start our days adventure we walked the 2 km to the samurai museum, we had to wait 20 minutes for the next tour to start. So we walked around to find a snack nearby, it didn’t take long to find a booth selling huge skewers of tempura crab & omelets. Now I have a thing for deep fried eggs, they are so damn tasty. The museum was really cool, being able to hold ancient swords, and try on armor with real helmets. The tour was short and sweet and we got to throw shuriken (ninja stars) at the end of it. Hannah didn’t like this too much but I loved it.

After the museum we went for don at a nearby don restaurant. If you didn’t know, don is just sashimi on fresh rice. Hannah loves don back home so she was very excited. I ordered a bluefin don, Hannah a salmon don. Both were exquisite, simple and hard to beat in terms of fish quality. Bluefin tuna is so amazing, I wish it wasn’t $12-$24 per piece back home. My whole meal was $22 here.

From lunch we trained over to Fushimi Inari, To do the 10,000 Inari gate hike. On the way we passed by a Sanrio store, which Hans found a super cool Kuromi bag in. The hike was really cool, It was incredibly busy. We didn’t get to learn to much into the significance of the gates, it was so incredibly busy. Thankfully as we did the 5 km loop the crowd thinned, the path winds all over mount Inari and its gorgeous. It was a little more of a hike than either of us were dressed for, but we completed it in about 2 hours.

Our plan was to go check out the Kyoto Aquarium after Fushimi Inari, so we went back to the hotel to change into less sweaty clothes and headed there to catch the last hour of the Aquarium (when we originally checked closing time it wasn’t a weekend so we thought we had more time) . Sadly they close ticket sales 1 hour before doors close and we missed it by like 4 minutes. Hannah was kind of bummed, so we headed to a Family Mart to get a consolation sushi snack.

Now I love getting up high and seeing everything in a city from a vantage point, so we went up Kyoto Nidec Tower. On the same note Hans is terrified of heights, But she is a trooper so up we went to the top of the tower to have a look. It was cool to see all of Kyoto, which isn’t very big in comparison to Tokyo’s massive sprawl. Everything was great until the tower moved, I mean it moved kind of like a sign swaying in the wind. Well Hans did not like that one bit, She came with me knowing she hated heights. So I was happy to oblige going down after only a few minutes.

Safely back on solid ground, pangs of hunger in our stomachs we began our search for dinner. The area where the tower is, is on of the food hubs of Kyoto so it didn’t take long. I have never had teppanyaki before, so we went to a restaurant called Loin, to give it a try.

Braised wagyu with tofu and dashi broth.
Scallops with peas and matcha salt.

I LIKE TEPPNAYKI. I found out. I’ve always been apprehensive of trying it for some reason, the whole showy flair side of it back home was never truly that appealing. This was not that at all, our chef was in his late 60s and he was a consummate professional. Everything we ate was cooked to perfection and seasoned so well. We washed down our fanciest dinner of the trip so far with a half bottle of champagne, which funny enough paired very well with black wagyu fillet mignon. Our meal was way bigger than we bargained for and both of us left tipsy and stuffed.

3 salts from 3 different countries, soy sauce, ponzu, fried garlic, fresh wasabi, and fresh chili.

After a short walk back we ended our night lounging in the hotel for a couple hours. All in all it was a great adventure day. We certainly got our steps in.

P.s I am not sure if ill be able to enjoy any other steak again after eating wagyu in Japan.

    Till tomorrow.

  • Day 35 – THE DEER & Valentines Day

Well Today started with a buzz of excitement, as it was Valentines day and we are in Japan. How romantic. Also we planned a day trip to Nara, which is about an hour train away, to go see the famous sacred Sika deer of Nara park.

We went for a western fusion breakfast down the street from the hotel called Kacto. It was so surprisingly amazing. I had salmon avocado toast with mascarpone cheese and hash browns with bacon. Hans had pancakes with bacon, sausage, and eggs. We devoured it.

We Boarded the train after breakfast, and headed to Nara. Now we had no real idea of what we were in store for, when it comes to the deer. My expectation was a couple deer that bowed for food. Well how wrong I was, there was hundreds of them, just chilling and milling around. They were incredible, they would approach you and bow hoping to get a snack.

We purchased some deer crackers from a little Japanese lady at the entrance to the park, and trotted off to go feed some deer. Hannah & I had a gay ole time, I don’t think either of us expected to have as much fun as we did. Those deer were awesome, and slightly aggressive if you showed fear when feeding them. They knew we had snacks and they didn’t have any reservations about nipping or head butting you to get them. Both of us got bit a few times and I think Hannah’s ass might be a little sore from getting headbutted. They were gentle enough that all you had to do was steer their heads away when they were getting pushy.

Every deer we passed would bow to us. I cant speak for Hannah, but I think it is the highlight of my trip so far. We reloaded on deer crackers several times. After a while of walking we went and sat on a bench in the park, and a very nice doe came up to us. We affectionately named her Deerdra, She posed for many pictures with us. We may or may have given her special treatment in the form of an entire pack of deer crackers.

After walking a few kilometers through the park we worked up an appetite and went to a little Conveyor belt sushi called Kaiten Sushi Totogin, spot to gorge on nigiri. It was really good. I’m not super into buffets and stuff like that because I have a tendency to over eat, this was no different. It just kept coming and coming and coming. After both Hannah and I had our fill and some we jumped back on the train and headed back to Kyoto.

We were pretty spent after Nara and went and chilled for a bit before going out for a Valentines dinner at an Italian Japanese fusion spot. We had a 5 course set menu it was delicious, the portions were more than we were expecting and we both left so full I think we almost needed to roll home.

Seasoned burrata, with strawberries and prosciutto.
    Yellowtail Carpaccio with fresh greens.
Spaghetti with Italian sausage and red sauce.
BBQ duck breast with salt and horseradish.
    Japanese cheesecake with matcha powder.

After dinner Hannah had a romantic little Valentines surprise of rose petals throughout our hotel room. It was lovely. What a good day.

    Till Tomorrow.

  • Day 34 – Tokyo To Kyoto

Today both Hannah and I woke a bit flustered from strange dreams, last night. There is a reason you shouldn’t eat shitty salty junk food before bed. Your sleep will suffer. We started the day with a kind of cheap breakfast spot not far from the hotel. It was a DreamWorks themed robo server restaurant, the food was cheap and the animimated robot server was pretty damn cool.

From there we checked out of our hotel and trained across Tokyo to the shinkansen rail line at Tokyo station. This was the first time either of us had ever been on a bullet train. It was pretty damn cool it is surprisingly smooth for travelling 200kmh on rail track.

    Passing Mt Fuji at 200kph.

Now being in a different country with systems that are completely alien to you, can be just exhausting. After Traveling to Kyoto, both of us were pretty tired. We found a Gyu-katsu restaurant that served wagyu katsu and went for lunch. It was stellar, arguably one of the best things we ate here. Except that Hannah got my Wagyu and I got her tenderloin. We didn’t catch it till halfway through the meal. Lets just say she liked mine better than hers. Wagyu tenderloin is so incredibly delicious.

We spent the rest of the afternoon chilling in the hotel having a rest. At around 8 pm we went to a local Izakaya for a small dinner. We had some local specialty nigiri & tempura, it was very good. After our dinner we went straight to bed. Our turbo tour of Tokyo definitely was showing.

A note about Kyoto, It feels like a ghost town in comparison to Tokyo. There is a minute fraction of the people here.

This is Hans at 4 pm in Kyoto in a major intersection.

    Till Tomorrow

  • Day 33 – Tokyo Supreme

What a big day Hannah and I had planned for today. We started our day with a short walk to an incredible Japanese/western fusion breakfast restaurant, called Ivy Place. We shared an smoked salmon avocado toast with Brie and fresh greens, and some yogurt with granola and fresh fruit. It was delicious.

Having Hannah with me, has changed my eating habits a bit. I mean this woman loves a snack. We have been trying so many interesting new snack foods. Today was a snacking day for sure. Between the hours of 7am and and 1pm, we had breakfast, family mart snack sushi, Krispy Kreme donuts, hash browns, udon noodle soup, swirl cake, and a teriyaki chicken burger with a small fries from the tallest McDonalds I have ever seen.

During the middle of this walking snack tour of Shibuya, and Shinjuku we went to a place called Samurai Restaurant Time. Well lets just say we had no clue what we signed up for in the slightest, The whole place was covered in anime titties and fake jewels when we entered. Was it lunch, was it a dance show, music, strippers? Well it wasn’t strippers, but not far off, It ended up being a samurai themed musical theatre performance. And it was loud and exciting and absolutely crazy. Both Hannah and I left the show feeling a little shell shocked. The food they served was ok but nothing to write about.

We checked out piss alley after the show and it was cool but without knowing we had showed up before most of the stalls had opened for the day. At this point we already been walking and eating for 7 hours, both of us were feeling gassed. We had seen a lush store on a previous outing near our hotel, Hannah had the bright idea to get a bubble bar, and have a bubble bath back at the hotel. Now Japan is not really renowned for the size of its bathtubs, or having them at all, but our hotel had an amazing 2 person bath. It was quite rejuvenating in the middle of a big day.

Something that has become Hannah & I’s thing on this trip, Is strawberries. Strawberries in Japan are ludicrously expensive, and insanely good, So on our way back to the hotel for bath time, we found a little market that sold some “golden” strawberries. Gotdamnit, they are so good.

After a little hangout to rest our legs a bit we jumped on a train to go to Teamlabs, It is an interactive multimedia immersive experience. There is multiple Teamlab exhibits in Asia. Borderless is the one we went to, There was no map no explanations, every animation flowed into the next, all the different rooms were hidden and needed to be explored. It was really easy to be confused as to where you were as the floor to ceiling animations changed over time, making it really hard to set mental waypoints. There were so many different rooms and experiences, I think Hannah an I’s favorite was Infinite Expanse. The room was filled with floor to ceiling Led Diodes set up in a grid pattern, thousands of strings of LEDs all changing designs and effects synchronized to music. It was utterly breathtaking.

From Teamlabs we tried to go to a popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant. It took us ages to actually find it, Google maps decided to be useless in our hunt for this one. After finding it we made the realization that Japan is unlike Canada, People wait hours for seats in good restaurants. The waiting queue, was 53 tables strong with a minimum wait of 115 minutes. We had been busy all day and hadn’t eaten anything since about 1, Hannah had had it with not being fed in that moment. We Bailed on sushi and got a seat in the closest restaurant that served pasta we could find. To be honest there was no way I was going to wait for over 2 hours for food. Thankfully most restaurants here are in kind of upscale food courts, so getting a different decent place to eat was easy.

Both Hannah & I had pasta, meatballs and a limoncello soda. The food was decent, not the best Italian Id ever eaten, but what do you expect in Tokyo. At this point we were nuked, we ended up walking close to 24 kilometers throughout the day. It was a big day, We hit up a family mart on the way back to the hotel for our third round of Japanese snacks of the day. I found Spam Masubi, prepacked ready to eat. It was one of the weirdest things I’ve eaten, but also so delicious that I almost went and bought another one. Hannah has become very fond of snack sushi rolls, where you unwrap the rice and filling and the nori at the same time then freshly wrap the rice in the nori. They are pretty darn tootin. I think we have amassed about 12 different random bags of candy at this point from several trips to convenience stores around Tokyo.

After getting back I booked us some train tickets and got our next hotel room in Kyoto. Then we both fell straight asleep.

    Till tomorrow
