The Great Dopamine Rush of 2025

    • Day 0

  • Day 9 – Waterfalls and Mountain Tops

On my final day here in Pai, I really wanted to make the most of it. I started my day around the fire to warm up and then headed to Break The Fast for some pre hike breakfast. I had a Egg BLT as the menu said it, it was ok but was missing mayonnaise. You’d be hard pressed to find it here.

After breakfast I rode 20 minutes out of town on dirt track to the start of the Hua Chang waterfall hike. Waterfall hikes are my favorite hikes. Lots of water crossings, missing trail and always very beautiful. This one was no different. I crossed the river no less than 45 times, and lost the trail some 10 times, and it was a beautiful hike. Even if you get lost, you are not really lost. Just trudge up the creek until you find the trail again. At the falls I had a snack and sat and listened to the roar of the water.

When I came down from Hua Chang my heat rash came back with a vengeance as it was now midday, So I spent the hottest hours of the day just hanging out at the bungalows. I went back to the drugstore and got some cortisol cream which really helped with the pricklyness. My friend Kev from back home suggested I use some Tryactin. You know Tryactin like a man. Lol good one.

After the Tryactin kicked in I got on my bike and rode 40 km up to Doi Miang and Doi Thong. Two mountains overlooking Pai, to watch the sunset. The drive was great and the views were incredible. I met some cool Canadians from the Yukon at the top of Doi Thong, and I was able to video chat home to my girlfriend and too a couple friends, that was really cool.

From Doi Thong I drove straight to the walking street for my last meal of northern street fair, I was not disappointed with my “Bestseller” which is a funny bit of marketing and it worked on me, It just so happened to be the most expensive thing on the menu. That’s a baked potato, with beans, sour cream, Guacamole, and cheese. It truly was delicious.

I’m absolutely shafted writing this so if it seems sloppy its cause I’m exhausted and currently covered in fruit ants. Tomorrow I do the big drive back to Chiang Mai and then catch a flight to Krabi.

  • Day 8 – Prickly Heat

Today started off quite cold. As I now believe is customary here at Bannamhoo I met a few other travelers around the morning fire for a quick warm up. When I was sufficiently toasty I hopped on my bike, and headed off for the morning’s adventure.

There is something about hot springs here in Pai that I just love, I’m truly not sure if its because its so relaxing to just soak in natural warm water while your traveling or because of some magical mix of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals in the water here. Regardless, last year and this year I’ve gone to a hot spring here every day.

Before long 2 hours had past in the crystal clear pools, I was graced by some great conversation from a couple of fellow Canadians. By fluke coincidence they just so happened to live only a city over back in Canada. Conversation came easy and many topics were covered, hence the 2 hours in the pools. I was grateful for it as its not the most common thing to meet people of a relatable mindset here in Asia. It was really starting to be an amazing day.

When I got back to the bungalows it was near midday, and it was starting to get quite warm. I noticed a kind of a prickly sensation starting on my arms and face and neck and back. I thought maybe it was from not rinsing from the hot spring, so I had a hot shower. What a mistake that was, then I noticed I was covered in itchy, prickly red spots. Heat rash, or as they call it in Thailand prickly heat. I’ve never experienced heat rash, by golly gosh it truly fuckin sucks. My whole day was basically canceled at that point. Any time the sun touched my skin it felt like I was being burned with a laser.

I tried my best to enjoy the nicest parts of the day, Going for lunch at a very authentic Thai restaurant called Noppakao. I had some simple stirfried vegetables and a fried egg on rice. It was pretty damn good for $2 cad with a drink. After lunch I went to go check out the Saturday community market at a local park. Where I had one of my favorite beverages in Thai land, Thai tea. As it was the hottest part of the day and there was almost no shade at the park I realized I needed to cure what ailed me. From a short text conversation with a friend back in Canada and some google searches I figured out what I needed and set off to get it. Thankfully pharmacies here in Pai are well equipped and well versed in dealing with travelers, cooling powder and antihistamines apparently is the ticket for heat rash if you didn’t know.

I ended back at the bungalows waiting for the sun to go down as I was in a fair bit of discomfort, once it was low enough I ventured back out to get some dinner. After trying to use maps and going to 6 different restaurants that were either closed or out of business, I finally ended up at Khao Soi Pai. Which by the way is a definitely a contender for best khao Soi I’ve had here. It was great but the portion was small so I wandered off to find another local spot. I ended up in a restaurant I don’t know the name of which served me a very unique looking panang curry That was a little touristy but very good.

On my way back through town I found a nice scarf that will complete my Thai Cold weather scooter suit, I’ve been apparently buying. It was kind of a tough day, But traveling isn’t always easy and you wouldn’t learn to be an independent person of the world if everything was always smooth as the silk of my new scarf. The view of the night sky as the last light of the sun faded was absolutely stunning from where I parked my bike. I really hope the antihistamines do their job as it would be very inconvenient to not be able to enjoy the sun tomorrow.

  • Day 7 – My Pai Is Getting Warmer

I Started my day today around a campfire with a bunch of other travelers, Which is incredibly weird for me to say as normally back home we only have campfires at night. Here in the north of Thailand were nobody has heating as it only gets kind of chilly for about 2 months of the year, The morning is the coldest time of the day. So fires.

Around the fire I chatted with a German fellow named Klaus for nearly an Hour, Klaus who I met last year here is a semi permanent guest here at Bannamhoo, living here about 9 months of the year. I mean its pretty damn tempting for a monthly price tag of only $500ish Canadian. I could afford that.

After the fire I grabbed some cat treats I brought with me and went and fed the ten cats that live here on the property, I love kitties. When I had my fill of pussy I hopped on the scooter and froze my way to Tha Pai hot spring just 10 km away from the bungalows. It is a little pricey at 300baht entrance fee, But I’m a slut for a hot spring and the warm spring water did wonders for my sore cold ass.

I got back into town around Noon and decided to go check out a restaurant called Lek Lek that Klaus had recommended to me, he apparently eats there most days. It is run by 3 generations of a Thai family and it truly did not disappoint. I ordered Thai fried chicken and curried fried rice which had that classic Thai simplicity to it, That I really do enjoy about actual authentic Thai food. Not tourist Thai food.

When I finished lunch I went to the Bank here in Pai to exchange some money, It was a unique experience for me as there was pews in the bank just like a church and when you walked in, you were given a number and sat on a pew until your name was called. It was strange seeing a bank use an almost all paper filing system. We haven’t had that in Canada since I was a small child.

In the afternoon I took a jaunt out to Pai canyon and went for a short but very hot hike through the limestone and clay ridges that make Pai canyon such a tourist destination for sunset. Its incredibly beautiful to watch the sunset there, but I could not be bothered to deal with the crowds and I headed back to the bungalows to do some research on the latter parts of my trip.

As I was on my computer looking up train travel in Japan, Pak and Noom who run Bannamhoo suprised me with a delicious bowl of chicken, morning glory & cabbage soup. You know that Classic Thai simplicity I wrote about earlier, This bowl of soup was the epitome of it, served with a side of sweet chili sauce. It was an excellent albeit unexpected dinner. Just another one of the reasons I love this place

To finish off my day I scootered down to the walking street to see if I could find a windbreaker to make the cold morning rides a little more bearable. As I was leaving, Another traveler here who hasn’t yet mastered the art of the Thai scooter named Heun also wanted to visit the walking street so she came with me. It was quite nice hanging out with another traveler in a similar age group to me, She is from China but spoke quite good English, and she decided to help me find a windbreaker. Thankfully she was with me, because she spotted one in store from about 50 ft away in green (my favorite color) and my size. Which is incredibly rare in Thailand.

All in all today was a super chill Beautiful day. The type of day that attracts so many travelers from around the world to Pai.

“Don’t long for things you don’t have; instead, be grateful for the things you do have. Imagine how desirable they would seem if you didn’t already have them. At the same time, don’t become so attached to your possessions that you would be upset if they were damaged or lost.” – Marcus Aurelius

  • Day 6 – Just A Cold Slice Of Pai

Today I realized an error in my judgement in a big way, I didn’t pack a jacket or windbreaker of any kind for this trip. Estupido. I left Chiang Mai at 7 am this morning and scootered the 128km through the mountains to the town of Pai, Armed with nothing but long pants and a loose knit sweater you can tackle the 14c mornings of northern Thailand with relative ease. That is until you have to scooter for 4 hours through the mountains at 50-65km. I might as well have been naked, and 14 degrees feels like 2 degrees after a couple hours. The wind chill is vicious. At the 1 hour mark into my journey is where I started to actually run into some serious problems, I was shivering so violently that it was ever becoming increasingly hard to control the scooter through all the switchbacks and hair pins and blind 90s that the road to Pai is famous for. The drive should take about 2 hours 45 mins, but it took me a little over 4 hours because for the last 3 hours I was stopping every 15 mins to unthaw in any sliver of sunshine I could find. This drive was definitely a big goal of this trip and I’m so excited I did it, That being said I really am not looking forward to the drive back as I have to do it in the early morning again, To catch my flight to Krabi from Chiang Mai in a few days. It truly was one of the coolest roads I’ve ever had the freezing pleasure of driving and the country side is incredibly beautiful, I cant wait to see the Go-pro footage when I get back to Canada. Funny enough because of my aggressive clothing error I took naught a single photo on my journey here. Tomorrow ill get a bunch of pictures. This Place is incredibly beautiful, in Many ways in reminds me of my hometown of Squamish BC.

After landing at Ban nam hoo Bungalows, where I’m staying here in Pai I was hit with some disappointing news that they had double booked the deluxe bungalow that I had rented. That was a little sad but the regular bungalows here are still very nice, nice enough that I came back here after my trip last year.

Thankfully my room was ready several hours earlier than check in and I was able to dump all my gear. The town of Pai has an incredible vibe and is very welcoming to every kind of traveler, but it is a backpackers haven. The restaurants are quite inexpensive, plentiful, and I’ve yet to have a bad meal here. For Lunch I Stopped at the Gorilla Cafe and had a Pork omelet on rice and a Panang Curry that I must say didn’t look great, But both were totally delicious. when you are paying $5 Canadian for 2 dishes and a drink I think you can pass on some poor presentation.

After lunch I went back to the Bungalows to get some water, chill for a bit , and call home. I did both those things, but I also had an unplanned and totally necessary 2 hour nap after mistakenly sitting on the bed.

From my nap I decided to go get a massage at one of the numerous parlors, and was pleasantly surprised with the incredible height of pain and relief the masseuse dealt to me. Both of us were laughing at the plethora of grunts, groans, and involuntary twitches that came from me.

In Pai one of the most unique draws of this place is the walking street, every night 6 blocks of downtown Pai are closed to vehicles and a delicious array of street vendors open. To me it is truly a one of a kind attraction for a town of only a couple thousand Thai locals. I cant wait for tomorrow to go hang out at some hot springs and hunt for some waterfalls.

After I scootered back to the bungalows I was greeted by an old feline friend of mine from last year here. Her name is Miu, She is such a friendly kitty cat. For the people she really likes she will just saunter right into your room and hop on the bed for beds. I feel honored as I miss my two cats back home dearly. I don’t know why she would choose to sit on my computer instead of the bed, But as we all know cats are cats.

  • Day 5 – Epic Crag Day

Todays Post will be pretty short, Its all in the title. I am absolutely knackered. This was my final day in Chiang Mai, one of the biggest reasons I came back to Chiang Mai was to climb The Crazy Horse Buttress and more so to climb Crisis Anxiety State Cave, This cave is something else its about a hundred feet in diameter and several hundred feet high inside.

Today I linked up with a rag tag bunch of climbers from all over the world and I got to complete the mission I had set out on to climb in this cave. we started our day at reunion wall and smashed out a couple awesome routes there as we were all getting to know each other. When the sun was reaching its peak and it was becoming uncomfortable to climb, we moved into the cave and it was spectacular I led 2 routes and they were both very fun technical climbs

As I arrived an hour before the rest of the group, I went on a little solo journey into Anxiety Crisis State Cave. I understand now the name, It was So quiet it was absolutely deafening, the complete lack of any sound was very eerie. I sat alone in the cave and contemplated life for that hour and it was surreal. After the cave we finished our climbing day at Tamarind village wall for lunch and a few more routes. My hands are starting to get used to the limestone so I’m not in nearly as much pain as the last two days. All in all it was an amazing day, I didn’t take any pictures of food or really anything for that matter I was so spent after climbing. I’m excited for tomorrow as I am driving the famous Pai highway, This will be the most dangerous day of my whole trip so wish me luck.

Don’t be swayed by how things appear. In the wake of a perceived loss, its easy to feel disappointed and discouraged. • Day 4 The Thai Way

In Thailand it is very common for most locals to never really eat at restaurants, instead they eat at market stalls and vendors. In my opinion this is where you will find the most authentic Thai experience while traveling here. The big fancy curries tourist favorites are not something I’ve ever really seen the locals eat, but market food, they love it. Its simple cheap and arguably where you’ll find the best local favorites.

This was one of the most Thai things I’ve ever seen, yes that’s a cat sitting with the fresh veggies, Totally food safe right.

This is my second trip to Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai Gate Market is a stand out for best place to stock up on fresh fruit, cooked meats and other goodies for a days adventure or just to grab a snack, with most things under $1 cad, you can really stretch your budget after having incurred some brutal unexpected expenses like I did yesterday without sacrificing taste or quality.

Even though most of this stuff has never seen a cooler or refrigerator, most of it is salted and seasoned enough that its perfectly safe for us foreigners to eat. My personal favorite is the spiral curried sausages which are absolutely to die for and pack really well for a day trip out to Crazy Horse Buttress as crag snacks.

For $7 cad I got some sweet bread, 3 bananas, 4 pieces of curried sausage, a massive portion of jack fruit, and half a pomelo. This was an awesome adventure breakfast/lunch and all of it was so good, the fruit is incredible in Thailand.

After I got my haul from the Market I hopped on my suped up shit box scooter and put putted the 30 odd kilometers to crazy horse, where I ran into a group of expats that graciously let me join their group and climb with them, Trent, Clara, Brad and, Alana if you ever read this, you guys are great.

The Crazy Horse Buttress climbing area is comprised of 22 climbing walls with over 280 routes, so its definitely somewhere you can climb for a long time and never climb the same route twice, This wall is called the Reunion wall.

Later in the day I walked about half a kilometer east of the reunion wall to the Tamarind Village, where I met another awesome group of climbers. I climbed a few more routes with them until my fingers were sore and my stomach was rumbling.

For dinner tonight I went to Lookbua restaurant which was highly rated on google and it truly did not disappoint. This pork fried rice was so simple but so delicious, I’m truly in awe of how tender pork is in Thailand.

This Thai-Chinese fusion roasted duck red curry was arguably the best dish I’ve ever had in Thailand, It was a perfect meal after a big day of climbing.

After dinner I had plans to meet up with a group of climbers who I am planning to go climb with tomorrow, before that i found myself with some time to kill so I took my put-put and explored around the old city of Chiang my for a bit which is quite beautiful at night.

On my little time killing adventure I found myself at Buak Hard Public Park, which I’ve been to before but during the day. The last time I went to the park it was dead no one around, but I made a realization that showed the differences of Thailand to Canada. Its hot as shit here in the day time so people go to the park at night because its cooler.

The park was absolutely jam packed with people walking running, exercising, doing yoga, dancing. which was totally a new experience for me. also all the ponds in the park were stuffed with the fattest koi fish I had ever seen. Which i totally made fatter by feeding them copious amounts of fish food, For some reason feeding koi is so relaxing to me, I love it.

As I have been writing todays blog post I realized its really the first day I’ve been able to focus on writing about what I did, instead of how I felt on this trip. Which is a nice change of pace for me. Today was just such an easy breezy beautiful day. Tomorrow is my last day in Chiang Mai and I’m super excited to go climb with a big group of people at the Buttress.

Ps. If my grammar is shit today its because I’m falling asleep writing this post and truly have stopped caring about punctuation.

  • Day 3 If its Broke Fix it

What a day today has been, an expensive day, A day full of involuntary expenditures, but with so good times and good food too.

I started the day with the realization that I wasn’t having issues with my Esim, Its just that my phone was well and truly fucked, Thankfully phones are relatively inexpensive in Thailand. After a couple hours at a phone shop I now have a brand new phone fully cloned from my old one, YAY! Problem solved. No more brick of lava in my pocket that went from 100 to 0 battery in less then half a day.

I was able to find the type of scooter I needed to do the mountainey road to Pai that I will be driving in a couple days (one of the most curvy sections of highway in the world) 300 corners in 50 kilometers here I come. And I got it for a great price, much better then what I was quoted yesterday. Almost half the cost.

I was able to pop in to Kats for any early lunch as I was pretty hungry after a morning of spending most my Thailand budget, and the food did not disappoint. Who would’ve thought a fried egg salad would be one of the highlights of my day, that and the fat noodle pad Thai I had were both sublime and totally budget friendly, washed down with a sweet lemon tea and a video chat from my partner, I will definitely be back there.

After lunch I made my way up to the Crazy Horse Buttress, (The whole reason I came back to Chiang Mai) to do some climbing. The climbing partner i had arranged bailed as I was enroute so I showed up solo which to my surprise was not a problem at all as I met a small group of awesome climbers on a wall called the furnace, aptly named as it was in the sun and hot as hell. I climbed 2 routes, a 5c and a 6a, Both were super fun and flowy with lots of cool limestone features. when I attempted my third route of the day (6c+) I slipped on the crux and realized I had blown out my big toe of my left shoe. On the FIRST day of a climbing trip, You gotta be kidding me. I attempted the route a few more times but with my left shoe mangled it was not a fair fight. So I said goodbye to my new friends and went off to find a new pair of shoes. With some information from my ne friends, I was able to find my same shoe and right size for cheaper than in Canada at this awesome little climbing wall/store so that was cool. I cant wait to get back out to the Buttress tomorrow and tackle the main wall.

To Finish off my day I decided to go to a slightly fancier restaurant called Dash then id normally go to as I try to stay away from places that really cater to tourists, And I was reminded why I stay away from places like It, The food was mediocre at best, the bill was 3 times more than id pay from less touristy restaurants and all the people seated around me sucked. That’s my bad for not sticking to holes in the walls. My meal wasn’t the best BUT, THE MANGO STICKY RICE DUDE. That shit was FIRE, best I’ve ever had. most expensive I’ve ever had but Definitely the best.

Hamburger Gyoza (I don’t know what i was thinking ordering these, they sucked)
    Crispy pork belly salad

After the day I had today I am beat, but not beaten. Heres to hoping I’ve gotten the biggest pains out of my way for this trip and its smooth sailing from here!

  • Day 2 Butthurt, Jetlagged, Full

Today I flew from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, and for some reason my butt is so sore I can barely sit down. Man I wish I had the money for first class flights, These budget seats for long flights are a literal pain in the ass.

Traveling always presents unique challenges and obstacles especially in foreign countries with different standards and customs. Things like Esim cards just not holding the carrier so your phone is constantly cycling between 5G and no service which drains your phone battery so fast it leaves you stranded without any idea how to get back to your hotel, or bike rental shops with written contracts that don’t actually mean anything because the business owner decided to change their rental policy and only except passports and not ID cards or an exuberant amount of money. or walking all around an area trying to rent a bike big enough to drive into the mountains and having literally no luck. I went to 6 rental shops and couldn’t get a bike. Better luck tomorrow I guess.

I am 10/10 jetlagged today and there is no other comparable feeling other than waking up on day 3 of a big festival at 9am after going to bed at 5. Its like doing life on Hardcore mode. For some reason this is one of my favorite feelings, my brain and body are both in different time zones and its a struggle. I always seem to grow from these moments when everything kinda sucks but your also there to explore & have fun so you figure it out and make the best of it.

As this is my second time here in Chiang Mai, I know some of the dope spots to go eat and I went to one of my favorites today as soon as I got checked in. Maybe its because I’ve been starving every time I’ve eating at Coconut Thai Food, but the food is always unreal and tonight did not disappoint. Green curry and rice with spring rolls and a pineapple shake….. like damn, I love the food in Thailand.

Thailand can be such a random place sometimes you never know what your gonna see. Like this 8 year old girl playing system of a down on the drums

To finish off my day I tried to go to a popular restaurant called Kats but the line was too busy so I ended up going back to Coconut Thai Food and that spot did not disappoint again. The restaurant was so busy I got seated in the staff eating area behind the restaurant, which I thought was hilarious

    My private dining terrace
Drunken noodle and Thai Omelet (arguably the best omelet you’ll ever have)

Khao Soi (I obviously overate this meal) it was worth it

People long to escape life’s struggles, and relax in country houses, by the seaside, or in the mountains. But it is within your power to find solace at any time, by retreating into yourself. When your thoughts are orderly and tranquil, there’s no place quieter and more peaceful than your own soul. There, you are free.

  • Day 1 Soaring at 38000ft

As I sit in the restaurant of my airport hotel getting breakfast on, I find myself thinking about yesterdays travel. Travelling to SE Asia from the west coast is no small feat. This is my third time making the crossing and for all intents and purposes it was by far the smoothest and mentally it was by far the calmest I’ve ever been. In keeping with the theme of this whole blog I am trying to be very mindful of all the stimulus traps I find myself in regularly. TV FB socials etc, I very recently have discovered a love for classical and orchestral music. I have to say, walking through an airport with some epic Beethoven crescendo playing through my ear buds was one of the most calming and comical things I have ever done. 17 hours of flights is much too long to read the whole time so i was watching movies for a bunch of it, but for a large portion I was just sitting listening to Beethoven, Bachs, and Vivaldi and contemplating life. It was the calmest I think I’ve ever felt in my adult life.

The Highlight of yesterdays travel without a doubt was when my adolescent seat neighbor decided that I was a better pillow then her mother on her other side and proceeded to sleep the deepest I’ve ever seen a human sleep for over an hour, my partner has told me many times that I am very comfortable and I guess that proves that theory. what made it such a wholesome moment was the shock and confusion in her eyes when she woke cuddled up to a stranger and her moms silent thank you’s for letting her daughter sleep.

Surprisingly enough the food served on Cathay Pacific flights is actually pretty damn good, the Char Su and rice we were served during one of the meals was just as good as I’ve gotten it from restaurants throughout Thailand, All in all it was a great start to this trip, today I travel to Chiang Mai to actually start touring and I cant wait

  • Day 0 – preparing to fly

Im sitting in my living room. This is the last day I’ll be here for 6 weeks. It’s a surreal bittersweet feeling leaving this ultra stimulating dopaminers wet dream that I created to always keep me stimulated. It’s kinda cluttered with art everywhere. On this trip, I’m visiting 4 countries in 40 days, and today, for the first time in my memory, I’m going to disconnect from all social media platforms. Which somehow is giving me more anxiety than leaving my little world for 6 weeks and traveling solo across asia. The biggest thing I’m worried about is the mental health of my two kitty cats, which is hilarious. Anyways, this is my first ever blog post. A new era has begun. I think.
